Across the state of Tennessee, football players and coaches are preparing for the last game of the season: the 2023 BlueCross Bowl State Championship. Metro Nashville Public Schools is the only school district with the opportunity to bring home two gold football trophies due to the appearance of two teams, East and Pearl-Cohn, in the championship – one in Class 3A and one in Class 4A.
The Eagles of East Nashville Magnet School, led by first-year head coach Damien Harris, will play Friday, December 1, at 10 a.m. (CST). The Eagles will face off with Alcoa High School for their third appearance at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga. The Pearl-Cohn High School Firebirds will play Upperman High School on Saturday, December 2, at 10 a.m. (CST), also at Finley Stadium. The Firebirds are led by Coach Tony Brunetti, who recently earned the title of MNPS’ winningest coach.
“The continued and sustained excellence of these programs is a testament to the hard work of the student-athletes and coaches. We most also credit the support of the schools, administration, the band cheerleaders, faculty, and staff as well as the community who continue to boost and back our schools,” says Mark North, high school athletic director. “We must never take for granted the enduring support of Dr. Battle and the MNPS School Board.”
