The holidays just ended, but it’s already time to start thinking about what the summer will bring for MNPS students – and MNPS has a fun and free solution. 
Once again this June, the district is offering daily academic enrichment through the Promising Scholars program at more than 60 elementary, middle, and high school sites across Nashville and Davidson County. Promising Scholars returns June 1-30 for students entering grades K-12 in August, with optional registration starting today, January 17.
Each Promising Scholars site will feature a mix of classroom learning; science, technology, and art activities; physical activity, and other fun experiences. The program has a Monday-Friday, full-day schedule for rising kindergarteners through eighth graders and a half-day for rising ninth graders through 12th graders, allowing time for summer jobs.
The program includes breakfast, lunch, and transportation each day. Some sites also will offer after-care. Hours are 8 a.m.-3 p.m. for grades K-5; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. for grades 6-8, and 7-11 a.m. for grades 9-12.
All Promising Scholars sites and district offices will be closed Monday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth.
A Chance to Catch Up Academically
Although academic work will not be graded, elementary and middle school students in Promising Scholars will have an opportunity to get caught up academically before the 2023-24 school year begins. All students will work on subjects and areas specific to their individual academic needs.
Parents of current third graders should be aware that Tennessee has adopted a new state law that requires all third-grade students to test as proficient in English Language Arts on the TCAP assessment that is administered each spring. Students who do not test as proficient can attend a summer learning program to make up ground and advance to fourth grade. If your third grader is not on track to test as proficient, you should plan on them attending Promising Scholars.
Credit Recovery for High School Students
In addition to ACT prep and enrichment opportunities through Promising Scholars, high school students will have credit recovery options this summer as well as extended school year (ESY) for Exceptional Education students and programs for English Learners. High school students should check with their school counselors for details.
