Two MNPS Schools Recognized for STEM Education

NASHVILLE, Tennessee - (May 20, 2019) - Metro Nashville Public Schools is celebrating two more schools in the district for their efforts in STEM education.

Croft Middle School and Rosebank Elementary School have been recognized for their work in the transformational teaching and learning model. Croft was named one of 11 schools across the state of Tennessee awarded the Tennessee STEM School designation. Schools that receive the honor are recognized for their use of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) teaching and learning strategies and serve as a model from which other schools may visit and learn. Croft is one of only two middle schools in the nation offering a dedicated scientific research focus on zoology.

Rosebank recently became the first and only STEM certified elementary school in MNPS through AdvancED's STEM certification program. Rosebank, which emphasizes integrated technology and biological sciences, joins only 147 schools to hold this accreditation nationally. The certification provides Pre-K-12 institutions a research-based framework and criteria for continuous improvement and assessment, quality, rigor and substance of their STEM educational programs.

MNPS also has AdvanceED STEM certified programs at the high school and middle school levels. Stratford STEM Magnet School and Rosepark Magnet Middle School both received the designation last June. MNPS began emphasizing STEAM education (“A” represents the arts) during the 2017-2018 school year. A total of 18 middle schools and five elementary schools were identified for the learning experience. “We are very proud of the achievements these two schools have made in the area of STEM education,” said Dr. Jennifer Berry, MNPS director of STEAM science. “Our schools have put a lot of work into creating learning environments that help students think critically, be creative, better communicate and collaborate with their peers.”
