Are you feeling a little overwhelmed by the FAFSA application process? You're not alone! Many students and parents have questions about this important step in securing financial aid for college.

Don't worry, though — we're here to help. Here are answers to some common questions you might have about the FAFSA application.

Why is it Important to Submit My FAFSA Early?

Applying for financial aid early can make a big difference! Many financial aid programs have limited funds, so applying early increases your chances of receiving aid. Plus, some colleges and universities award aid on a first-come, first-served basis, so don't wait. Here’s the timeline:

  • In Tennessee, the student assistance award deadline is April 15, which includes things like Pell Grants.
  • The priority deadline for state scholarships is May 15.

Maximize your total financial resources by completing your application today!

My Student Submitted Their Part of the FAFSA, but I Haven’t. Is that OK?

Yes, student applications need to be submitted in-full by the priority deadline. Parents have until later in the summer to submit the contributor application.

How Do I Know if My Student is Eligible to Apply for the FAFSA?

All U.S. citizens are eligible for federal financial aid, regardless of their parents’ immigration status. Parents will be able to complete the FAFSA application using their FSA ID. We know this process can be confusing, so reach out to your school or our community partners who can help. Alternately, students can submit their parents’ 2022 tax return to submit the application.

Parents will have to review and submit this information after the student’s FAFSA application is processed. More information is available in this helpful blog post.
